Danny was the first choice to play Gabbar Singh in Sholay and declined, having already given his dates to Feroz Khan for Dharmatma. Amjad Khan took the role and it became the most famous villain in Indian cinema.

Ramesh Sippy's Sholay (1975) is routinely called the greatest Hindi film ever made, and Gabbar Singh its greatest villain. Before Amjad Khan was cast, the part was offered to Danny Denzongpa.
He had already committed to Feroz Khan's Dharmatma, which was shooting in Afghanistan — the first Indian feature to film there. Danny has explained the refusal in terms of obligation rather than judgement: "It was because of a prior commitment and my word of honour that I had to let go of Sholay."
Unlike most missed-casting stories, this one is not disputed and has never been walked back. Danny has said publicly that he has no regrets, and has argued that his refusal is the reason audiences got Amjad Khan's performance at all. It remains the single fact most often attached to his name — a role he never played.
