Independence Day 2026: The Biggest Patriotic Films on Indian OTT
Eight Indian war and freedom-struggle films, ranked by worldwide gross, with the platform each one streams on in India today — from Border in 1997 to Dhurandhar: The Revenge in 2026.
The week before 15 August is the one week a year when Indian streaming stops being about what is new and starts being about what is old. Border goes back into rotation. Rang De Basanti trends. Somebody rediscovers that Swades is on Netflix. The platforms know it, which is why the biggest patriotic title of the year almost always lands in the first half of August rather than the second.
This is a ranking of the Indian war and freedom-struggle films that made the most money worldwide and that you can actually press play on in India today. Both halves of that sentence do work. Plenty of the genre's landmarks — Lagaan, Lakshya, the 2007 1971 — are not on any Indian service as of this week, so they are not here. Every film below is, and the platform tag on each card comes from live provider data rather than from the launch announcement, so a film that has since changed hands shows its current home.
One caveat up front, because the numbers below span twenty-nine years: these are unadjusted worldwide gross figures. Border's ₹66.70 crore in 1997 bought a great deal more than ₹66.70 crore does now, and on an inflation-adjusted basis it would sit far higher than eighth. The order here is the order the ledger records, not a claim about which film India watched most.

NetflixJioHotstar7.3Worldwide gross 1,852.44 crore The genre's new ceiling, and it is not close. Aditya Dhar's sequel took roughly four times the worldwide gross of any other Hindi release this year and then set the biggest digital launch India has recorded, drawing 50 million viewers on its JioHotstar opening weekend. Dhar made Uri seven years and one entry further down this list ago, on a budget of 44 crore; Dhurandhar cost several times that and opened simultaneously in five languages, which tells you exactly what the patriotic-action film has become as a commercial proposition. Ranveer Singh plays the operative sent across the border and left there. It is the only film on this list available on two services at once.

NetflixZee5Worldwide gross 1,300 crore S. S. Rajamouli took two real anti-colonial revolutionaries who never met — Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem — and asked what would have happened if they had. The answer involved a tiger, a shoulder-mounted friend and an Academy Award for Naatu Naatu, the first ever won by a song from an Asian film. It is the least literal freedom-struggle film here and by some distance the most watched one outside India, which is its own argument about what travels. Streaming in Telugu and dubbed versions on both Netflix and Zee5.

NetflixWorldwide gross 400 crore The most successful Tamil film ever made about the Indian Army, and the one recent entry on this list that is a biography rather than a battle. Sivakarthikeyan plays Major Mukund Varadarajan of the Rashtriya Rifles, killed in Shopian in 2014 and awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously; Sai Pallavi plays his widow, Indhu Rebecca Varghese, and the film is at least as much hers. Rajkumar Periasamy spends its first hour on a college romance before it ever reaches Kashmir, which is precisely why the last hour lands.

Zee5Worldwide gross 342.06 crore Made for 44 crore by a first-time director and returning nearly eight times that, Uri is the film that proved the modern Indian war picture could be a blockbuster rather than a prestige release — and everything above it on this list, including its own director's Dhurandhar, is downstream of that. Vicky Kaushal's "How's the josh?" escaped the film entirely and became a stock phrase in Indian public life within weeks of release. Zee5 has it exclusively.

Prime VideoWorldwide gross 240 crore Chiranjeevi as Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, the Rayalaseema chieftain who took up arms against the East India Company in 1847 — a decade before the revolt that usually gets called the first war of independence. Ram Charan produced it for his father and spent between 200 and 300 crore doing so. Worth noting that Wikipedia's own article carries the historians' objection: Reddy's rebellion was a fight over rights and revenues the Company was confiscating, and the nationalism the film projects onto it did not exist yet. It is a rousing film and a contested history at the same time.

The complication the film has to carry is that they were fighting for the British Indian Army, not against it, and Anurag Singh resolves it by making the story about the twenty-one rather than the empire they served. Akshay Kumar's most restrained performance in a decade of playing soldiers. On Netflix and Prime Video both.

Prime VideoJioHotstarWorldwide gross 97.90 crore Released on Republic Day 2006 and the highest-grossing January release in Hindi cinema for years afterwards, though the gross is the least interesting number attached to it. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's structure — five Delhi twentysomethings cast in a documentary about Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and Ashfaqulla Khan, who then find the parallel closing on them — is the reason this is still the film people put on for Independence Day rather than any of the ones above it. A. R. Rahman's score did roughly as much of that work as the script.

Dutta's three-hour account of the Battle of Longewala in 1971 — 120 Indian soldiers against a Pakistani armoured regiment — was made for 12 crore and returned more than five times that in 1997 rupees, which on any adjusted basis would put it several places higher than eighth. Every ensemble war film India has made since is built on its template, down to the roll call of soldiers each given one letter home. Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty and Akshaye Khanna, and the single most played Independence Day song in the country in Sandese Aate Hain.
Four of the genre's most-watched titles are missing from the ranking above for a structural reason rather than an editorial one: they never played in cinemas, so there is no box office figure to rank them on. They are the ones to reach for once you have worked through the list.
Shershaah went straight to Prime Video in August 2021 and remains, by most platform accounts, the most-watched Hindi war film in streaming history — Sidharth Malhotra as Captain Vikram Batra, whose Kargil citation supplies the film's title. Sardar Udham, also Prime Video and also 2021, is the opposite film in every respect: Shoojit Sircar and Vicky Kaushal spend two hours and forty minutes refusing the revenge structure the premise promises, and the Jallianwala Bagh sequence in its final act is the most unsparing thing in modern Hindi cinema.
The new one is Operation Safed Sagar, which arrived on Netflix on 7 August — a series on the Indian Air Force's air campaign over Kargil in 1999, with Siddharth, Jimmy Sheirgill, Abhay Verma and Dia Mirza. It is the only major patriotic title released into this Independence Day week, and the Air Force's side of Kargil has had far less screen time than the infantry's.
