The Couples Indian Reality TV Actually Made — and the Shows Where It Happened

By a wide margin the most productive of these shows. Season 9 in 2015 produced Prince Narula and Yuvika Chaudhary, who dated for three years and married in 2018; the same season had Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai, who married in 2016. Season 10 produced the only on-air wedding in the format's history, when Monalisa married Vikrant Singh Rajpoot inside the house in 2017. Season 15 in 2021 produced Karan Kundrra and Tejasswi Prakash, still together more than four years on. Not every famous pairing from the house met there — Rubina Dilaik and Abhinav Shukla entered season 14 already married, and Ankita Lokhande and Vicky Jain entered season 17 the same way.

The digital version, shorter and faster, and built around connections in a way the television show is more coy about — contestants are explicitly encouraged to pair up for tasks and votes. Whether that produces anything durable is a different question: the format's compression works against it, and most of what it has generated has not outlived the season.

Not a dating format at all, and it has still produced one of the best-known pairings on Indian television — Jasmin Bhasin and Aly Goni met on season 9 in 2019. Their relationship became public knowledge during Bigg Boss 14, which is where most people place its origin, but the show it actually started on was this one. Shooting stunts in a foreign country for six weeks turns out to be a reasonable substitute for a locked house.

The only show here explicitly designed to produce couples, and the one with the worst conversion rate — the format rewards strategic pairing over genuine attachment, and contestants have said as much openly. It has, however, been the launchpad for a long list of television careers, which is now more or less its function: a casting call disguised as a dating show.

The show that produced Prince Narula, who is the closest thing Indian reality television has to a career case study — he won Roadies, then Splitsvilla, then Bigg Boss 9, where he met Yuvika Chaudhary. Roadies itself is a competition rather than a romance, but the ecosystem it feeds is where a large share of the couples on this page eventually met.

The inversion of everything else here: a dance competition contested by couples who arrive already together, which over its run became a fairly reliable public stress test of those relationships. Several pairs separated during or shortly after their season, which the show was never shy about featuring. It belongs on this list as the format that measures relationships rather than manufacturing them.

The Bigg Boss format compressed and aimed at a younger audience — contestants confined to a house, eliminated by losing their bed rather than by vote. It ran for two seasons and produced a handful of much-discussed pairings, most of which did not last. Included because it is the clearest evidence that the house format, not the romance, is what generates couples: change the demographic and the same thing happens.
