Animation Is Now the Biggest Business in Cinema — the Numbers From 2026
Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie both crossed $1 billion this year. Ne Zha 2 and Zootopia 2 are in the all-time top ten. The animated films rewriting the box office, and which of them stream in India.

Four of the fifteen highest-grossing films ever made are now animated, and three of those four were released in the last two years. Ne Zha 2 sits fourth all time at $2.27 billion. Zootopia 2 is ninth at $1.87 billion. Inside Out 2 is eleventh. In 2026, two more animated films crossed $1 billion — Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — inside three months of each other.
This has crept up on the conversation because animation is discussed as a children's category and measured as one. It is not. Ne Zha 2 made almost all of its money from Chinese adults; the Spider-Verse films redefined how mainstream animation is designed; and the two most reliable commercial studios in the business right now are Illumination, which makes animated films cheaply, and Pixar, which does not. In a year that also produced a record-breaking Spider-Man and a billion-dollar Homer adaptation, animation still took a bigger share of the top twenty than any other category.
The India angle is unusually good here. Animated films reach Indian streaming faster than live-action tentpoles, because the studios releasing them mostly own the platforms — three of the titles below are already on JioHotstar. The figures are worldwide gross from Box Office Mojo, with the release year noted for the 2025 titles included for context.
1/8Toy Story 5

Film · 2026 · English · Jun 17, 2026
Worldwide gross $1,096,406,915 Year 2026 Pixar's fifth Toy Story, $1.096 billion, and a $472 million domestic run that is ahead of Toy Story 4's. The commercial lesson the studio drew from it is not about sequels — it is about distribution. Three Pixar features went straight to Disney+ during and after the pandemic and were then blamed for a decline in the brand; two theatrical releases in 2024 and 2026 have both cleared a billion.
2/8The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Film · 2026 · English · Apr 1, 2026
JioHotstarWorldwide gross $1,012,536,716 Year 2026 $1.01 billion, and Mario becomes the only video game property with two billion-dollar films. Illumination's model is the most quietly ruthless in the industry: production budgets a fraction of Pixar's or Disney's, aimed squarely at families, released into the biggest available corridors. Already on JioHotstar in India.
3/8Minions & Monsters

Film · 2026 · English · Jun 24, 2026
Worldwide gross $475,344,815 Year 2026 Illumination's second entry in the 2026 top twenty, at $475 million — which is what makes the studio's position so strong. Nobody else puts two animated films in a single year's top twenty, and nobody else does it on these budgets. Not yet on an Indian subscription service.
4/8Hoppers

Film · 2026 · English · Mar 4, 2026
JioHotstarWorldwide gross $389,685,783 Year 2026 Pixar's March original, $390 million, and the film that gets called a disappointment only because Toy Story 5 exists in the same calendar year. An original animated feature clearing $390 million is a good outcome by any measure that is not internal to Disney. On JioHotstar in India already.
5/8Blades of the Guardians

Film · 2026 · ZH · Feb 17, 2026
Worldwide gross $215,363,913 Year 2026 $215.4 million, of which $1.6 million came from North America — a Chinese animated feature that is the twentieth-biggest film of 2026 and effectively invisible in the Western trade press. It is the same story Ne Zha 2 told at ten times the scale: the Chinese animation industry now produces films at a commercial level the rest of the world does not track.
6/8Ne Zha 2

Film · 2025 · ZH · Jan 29, 2025
JioHotstarWorldwide gross $2,270,700,370 Year 2025 Context, and the single most important data point in modern animation. Released for Chinese New Year 2025, $2.27 billion worldwide, fourth-highest-grossing film of any kind ever made, and the highest-grossing non-English-language film in history by an enormous margin — achieved almost entirely within one market and with no meaningful Western marketing campaign.
7/8Zootopia 2

Film · 2025 · English · Nov 26, 2025
JioHotstar7.6Worldwide gross $1,866,647,950 Year 2025 Disney Animation's biggest film ever at $1.87 billion, ninth on the all-time list, released in November 2025 and streaming on JioHotstar in India now. A large share came from China, where the 2016 original was a phenomenon — which makes it, alongside Ne Zha 2, evidence that the two biggest animation markets in the world have converged on the same release calendar.
8/8Animal Farm

Film · 2026 · English · Apr 30, 2026
Worldwide gross $5M Budget $35M The counter-example, and worth including so the category is not oversold. Andy Serkis's long-developed Orwell adaptation cost a reported $35 million and took $5 million. Animation's commercial strength is real and it is also narrow: it applies to family-facing features and, in China, to mythological epics. An animated political allegory for adults has no route to an audience in this market.
Frequently asked
- What is the highest-grossing animated film of all time?
- Ne Zha 2, the Chinese fantasy sequel released for Chinese New Year 2025, at $2.27 billion worldwide — fourth on the all-time list of any film, and the highest-grossing non-English-language film ever made. The overwhelming majority of that came from a single market.
- How many animated films crossed $1 billion in 2026?
- Two — Toy Story 5 at $1.096 billion and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at $1.013 billion. Both are among the five films of any kind to have crossed the mark this year.
- Which animated films of 2026 can I stream in India?
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Hoppers are on JioHotstar, as is Zootopia 2 from late 2025. Minions & Monsters has not reached an Indian subscription service yet. The chip on each card carries the live position.
- Why isn't the live-action Moana on this list?
- Because it is a live-action remake, not an animated film — a different commercial product with a different cost structure. It also lost money: a reported $250 million budget against $264.7 million worldwide, which is a loss once marketing is counted. It appears in our list of 2026's biggest flops instead.
