Bollywood Couples Who Are Together in Real Life — and the Films They Made Together

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Bhansali's Gujarat-set Romeo and Juliet is where it started, in 2013, and it is still the best film the two of them have made together — largely because it is the only one that asks them to play people rather than monuments. Five more followed: Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, 83, Cirkus and Singham Again. They married in November 2018 at Lake Como, in back-to-back Konkani and Sindhi ceremonies, and had a daughter in 2024. No other currently-married Hindi film couple has this much screen time as a pair.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan. Tashan flopped hard enough that Yash Raj Films spent years being asked about it, and it is remembered now for two things: Kareena's much-discussed physical transformation for the role, and the fact that the two leads got together during the shoot. They married in October 2012. The better film of theirs is Omkara, made two years earlier, where they play Kesu and Dolly in Vishal Bhardwaj's Othello — she is astonishing in it, and it is streaming on Prime Video.

Ajay Devgn and Kajol. Married since 1999, and the only couple here with a film that Devgn wrote and directed specifically for the two of them — a drama about a wife with early-onset Alzheimer's, which is not the vanity project the setup suggests. They had already done six films together by then, including Gundaraj, Ishq, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha and Dil Kya Kare, most of them while they were dating and neither was admitting it. Twenty-six years of marriage in an industry that does not produce many of those.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Ayan Mukerji spent the better part of a decade making this, which meant the two leads met on it, fell in love during it, married in April 2022 and had a daughter — all before the film they shot together reached a cinema. The film's reception was mixed and its promised sequels have not arrived, but the relationship it produced is now one of the most-photographed in the country. They are next on screen together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War.

Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza. They met as co-stars on their debut, Tujhe Meri Kasam, in 2003, spent nine years working together on and off — Masti, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya — and married in February 2012, weeks after this one opened. Genelia stepped back from acting almost immediately afterwards and has returned only occasionally, most notably in Mister Mummy, again opposite him. Of everyone on this list they are the pair the industry treats as a single unit.

Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa. Hansal Mehta's remake of the British film Metro Manila is a bleak, excellent piece of work about a migrant family destroyed by Mumbai, and it was Patralekhaa's first film. They had already been together for four years by the time it came out and would be together for another seven before marrying in November 2021 — an eleven-year courtship, which even by this list's standards is patient. It remains the only feature the two of them have led together.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna. Three films together in the late 90s — Jaan, Zulmi and this one — none of which anybody defends, and Twinkle Khanna least of all; she quit acting shortly after and has been open about not having enjoyed the job. They married in January 2001. She has since become a considerably better writer than she was an actor, and Akshay has adapted two of her books into films he starred in, which is a stranger form of collaboration than sharing a frame.

Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha. They met on the set of Fukrey in 2012 — he is one of the four hustlers, she is the terrifying gangster Bholi Punjaban — and were together for a decade before marrying in October 2022 in Delhi and Mumbai. They have kept working in the franchise ever since, through Fukrey Returns and Fukrey 3, and have set up a production house together. A rare case of a couple whose most famous shared credit is also a comedy.

Kunal Kemmu and Soha Ali Khan. A small, well-liked 2009 caper about two small-time crooks sent to Delhi during the match-fixing scandal, and one of two films the pair made together that year — the other, Dhoondte Reh Jaoge, is best forgotten. They married in January 2015. The family connection is the part people forget: Soha's brother is Saif Ali Khan, which makes this list's second and third entries in-laws.
