The Biggest Kannada Films of 2026 So Far — and Where They Stream
No Kannada film has cleared 30 crore worldwide this year, four years after KGF: Chapter 2 took more than 1,200 — and only one of the year's six biggest has reached an Indian streaming service. The 2026 Sandalwood leaderboard.
Kannada cinema's 2026 is the hardest year to write up of any Indian industry, because the honest version of the story is an absence. The year's biggest Kannada release has taken 27.22 crore worldwide. In Malayalam, an industry of comparable size, two films cleared 230 crore; in Telugu and Tamil, four cleared 300. The gap is not marginal, and it is worth stating plainly rather than dressing a small number as a hit.
This is the same industry that released KGF: Chapter 2 in 2022 and Kantara in the same year, and whose Kantara: A Legend - Chapter 1 finished second across all Indian languages in 2025 at roughly 850 crore. Sandalwood has demonstrated twice in four years that it can make a film the whole country watches. What it has not done in 2026 is release one.
Figures below are worldwide gross as carried by Wikipedia's list of 2026 Kannada films. Indian box office reporting is not audited and trade sources disagree, sometimes widely: India Forums' 2026 flop tally puts the year's top film lower than Wikipedia does, and we note that on the entry rather than picking whichever number reads better. One film in Wikipedia's 2026 table, Raktha Kashmira, carries a December 2025 release date on TMDB, so we have left it off rather than rank a film whose year the two sources disagree about.

Worldwide gross 27.22 crore Prem's gangster picture, with Dhruva Sarja opposite Sanjay Dutt, spent years in production and arrived to 27.22 crore worldwide on Wikipedia's table. Either figure makes it the year's biggest Kannada release, which is the point being made here.

Worldwide gross 19.83 crore Darling Krishna directs and stars in the third film of the romance series he built himself, opposite Milana Nagaraj. At 19.83 crore it is within 8 crore of the year's number one on a fraction of its cost, and it is the closest thing 2026 Kannada has to a film that did what was asked of it.

Worldwide gross 2.57 crore K. M. Chaitanya directs Vinod Prabhakar and Priya Anand. Sixth place on 2.57 crore, separated from fifth by a lakh — at this end of the year's slate the ranking is less a leaderboard than a list of films that opened.
One year is not a verdict on an industry, and Kannada's recent history argues strongly against writing one. KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara came out of the same industry inside twelve months, and Kantara: A Legend - Chapter 1 finished second across all Indian languages in 2025. What 2026 shows is a release slate without a film at that scale in it, not an industry that can no longer make one.
The comparison worth making is with Malayalam, which has a similar home market and got six of its seven biggest films of 2026 onto Indian streaming within weeks; most of the Kannada list above has no Indian streaming home at all yet. For the rest of the country's year there is the Hindi list, the Telugu and Tamil one and the films that lost the most money.
