The Most-Watched Indian Web Series of 2026 So Far

On 12 August, Ormax Media published a piece on the year in Indian web series built around a single blunt finding: Pritam and Pedro has drawn roughly 23 million viewers, is tracking towards 27 million, and no other Indian web series has crossed even 20 million in 2026. In a year with more scripted originals than any before it, one show is that far clear of the field.

That is worth stating carefully, because the shape of it is unusual. Pritam and Pedro is Rajkumar Hirani's first work for streaming, it premiered on 3 July, and it took less than six weeks to pass shows that had been accumulating viewers since January. It is also now JioHotstar's most-watched series ever, on a platform whose subscriber base is mostly there for cricket.

Below are the scripted Indian originals with the largest audiences this year. Unscripted properties — India's Got Latent, Khatron Ke Khiladi, the daily soaps that dominate the weekly charts — are deliberately excluded; they operate on completely different viewing patterns and we cover them separately. One methodological warning before you read the numbers: the top entry is a cumulative figure to mid-August and the ones below it are cumulative to end-June, because they come from different Ormax releases. They are not like-for-like.

    JioHotstar8.1
Viewers to 12 Aug 202623 million

Rajkumar Hirani's first series, his son Vir Hirani's first acting role, and Arshad Warsi in the part the whole thing rests on. Ormax puts it at 23 million viewers with a projected finish near 27 million, which would make it the most-watched Indian web series of the year by a factor of roughly one and a half. It is the biggest show JioHotstar has ever had, it delivered the platform's largest opening for a scripted title, and it trended in six languages. The commercially interesting detail is the shape of the curve: it opened at 4.4 million in week one and more than doubled to 10.2 million in week two, which is word of mouth rather than marketing and is close to the opposite of how streaming launches usually decay.

    MX Player9.5
    Viewers, Jan–Jun 202617.8 million

The corporate origin story as prestige drama, and for the first half of the year the most-watched scripted Indian series going. It is a genre Indian streaming has tried repeatedly and rarely landed — the business procedural that expects the audience to care about a board meeting — and this one worked because the company at its centre is one most Indian households have a watch or a pair of glasses from. On MX Player, which makes it the only title in this top four available free.

  3. 3/4Chiraiya

    JioHotstar7.2
    Viewers, Jan–Jun 202616.3 million

A March premiere on JioHotstar that spent the spring as the year's biggest scripted show before its own platform replaced it in July. Its audience is the one Ormax has been writing about all year as the new centre of gravity for Hindi streaming — not the metro prestige-drama viewer the industry spent five years chasing, but a much larger one that arrived with cheap data and watches on a phone.

  4. 4/4Taskaree: The Smuggler's Web

    Taskaree: The Smuggler's Web

    Series · 2026 · Hindi · Jan 14, 2026

    Netflix
    Viewers, Jan–Jun 202614.2 million

Netflix's biggest Indian scripted title of the first half, a smuggling thriller that went out in mid-January and did most of its numbers before anything else on this list had premiered. Fourth on the year so far, and the highest-ranked show here from a platform other than JioHotstar — a sentence that would have read very differently in 2024.

Two structural things are visible in a list this short. The first is that JioHotstar now holds the top scripted title and the third, on a service most of its subscribers joined for sport. The second is that the field is thin: four shows above 14 million in eight months, against a slate of Indian originals that runs to well over a hundred titles a year. Volume has gone up and concentration has gone up with it.

Note also what is not here. India's most-watched streaming properties of 2026 are not web series at all — they are cricket, by an enormous margin, and then unscripted. The T20 World Cup drew 246 million viewers in India and the IPL 228 million, numbers that make 23 million look like a rounding error. We covered that gap separately in the cricket piece, and the unscripted side has its own chart.

If you are working through the list: Pritam and Pedro and Chiraiya are both on JioHotstar, Taskaree is on Netflix, and Made in India: A Titan Story is free on MX Player.
