The conspiracy accusations

Attributed to illness1980s–2000s

In the grip of paranoid schizophrenia, Parveen Babi publicly accused a string of powerful figures — including politicians and film personalities — of plotting to kill her. The claims were never substantiated and are understood as symptoms of her illness.

Nature
Public accusations of a plot against her life
Status
Unsubstantiated; attributed to paranoid schizophrenia

From the early 1980s, Parveen made increasingly alarming public statements alleging that she was the target of an international assassination conspiracy, at various times naming prominent people in politics and cinema as being involved. In one widely reported episode late in her life she made sweeping accusations against major public figures.

None of these allegations was ever supported by evidence, and they are today understood by her biographers and the press as manifestations of her diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia rather than statements of fact. Out of fairness to the living people she named, the claims should be read strictly as symptoms of a serious mental illness.
