A child of the studios

Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, Sridevi was in front of a camera before she could read a script. She made her debut as a four-year-old in the Tamil film Kandhan Karunai (1967) and spent her entire childhood as a working actress across the southern film industries, moving between Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

By her late teens she was already a major South Indian star, admired for a rare combination — a gift for broad comedy, a dancer's control, and an ability to switch into raw tragedy in a single cut. The talent that would later stun Hindi audiences had been forged over more than a decade of near-constant work.

The woman who conquered Bombay

Hindi cinema had leading ladies; it had never quite had a female superstar — a woman whose name alone sold tickets. Sridevi became the first. After Himmatwala (1983) made her a Bombay sensation, she strung together a run of hits that showed off the full width of her range in a way no contemporary could match.

She was heartbreaking as the woman who reverts to a child's mind in Sadma (1983), a shape-shifting serpent in the blockbuster Nagina (1986), a comic tour de force playing twins in ChaalBaaz (1989), and the impossibly charismatic Miss Hawa Hawai and Seema in Mr. India (1987). By the end of the decade the industry openly acknowledged her as its biggest draw — male stars included.

Stepping away at the top

In 1996 Sridevi married producer Boney Kapoor and, at the peak of her powers, largely stepped away from the screen to raise her daughters, Janhvi and Khushi. For a star of her magnitude it was an almost unheard-of exit — a voluntary silence right when the offers were richest.

She was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013, but for years the assumption was that her acting career belonged to the past.

The comeback — and the sudden end

Then, fifteen years later, she came back. English Vinglish (2012) — as a quietly humiliated housewife who secretly learns English — was a critical and commercial triumph that reintroduced her to a new generation. Mom (2017) followed, and would be her 300th and final film; her performance won a National Film Award.

On 24 February 2018, while attending a family wedding in Dubai, Sridevi died in her hotel room. Authorities recorded the cause as accidental drowning in the bathtub. She was 54. The suddenness — a beloved star at a joyous family occasion, gone in an instant — made it one of the most shocking celebrity deaths India had ever seen.
