Before Ramayana: Every Major Screen Version of the Epic and Where to Watch It in India
Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Part 1 opens on 6 November. Before it does, here are ten earlier tellings, from a 1961 effects spectacle to a Japanese-Indian anime and Ramanand Sagar's Doordarshan serial, with where each one streams.

Ramayana: Part 1, directed by Nitesh Tiwari with Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, opens worldwide on 6 November 2026, two days before Diwali. The release date was announced alongside the English-language trailer by Sony Pictures, which holds the international distribution rights. Part 2 is expected around Diwali 2027.
It is far from the first screen Ramayana. Indian cinema has been retelling the epic since the silent era, and every generation of film-makers has had its own version. One thread runs straight into the new film: Arun Govil, who played Ram in Ramanand Sagar's television series in 1987, plays Ram's father, Dasharatha, in Tiwari's.
Below are ten earlier tellings, in the order they were made, after a card for the new film. They include faithful adaptations, retellings that move the story into another world, and one American animated film that sets it to 1920s jazz. The order is chronological, not a ranking.
