Malayalam cinema has become the most reliable source of crime thrillers in Indian film. The films are usually mid-budget, built on a tight script rather than stars or action, and many of them come from a small group of writers who keep turning up in each other's credits. Shahi Kabir, a former Kerala police officer, wrote Nayattu, directed Ela Veezha Poonchira and wrote Officer on Duty. Jeethu Joseph made both Memories and Drishyam.
Several of these films travelled well beyond Kerala. Drishyam was remade in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi, and also in Sinhala and Chinese. Nayattu was remade in Telugu, and Joseph in Tamil. Most of them now stream on the major Indian services, which is how a lot of viewers outside Kerala first saw them.
