The Indian Films That Skipped Cinemas and Premiered on OTT, from Gulabo Sitabo to Mrs

Fifteen Indian films that went straight to streaming, from the lockdown releases of 2020 to National Award winners made for Netflix and Prime Video, with why each one skipped theatres and where it streams now.

OTTweek Desk · · 6 min read

Until 2020, an Indian film with stars in it went to cinemas first. Streaming was where it arrived eight weeks later. The pandemic broke that rule: with theatres shut, producers who had finished films had to choose between waiting indefinitely and selling them to a streaming service, and on 12 June 2020 Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana's Gulabo Sitabo premiered on Prime Video.

What began as an emergency turned into a second route to an audience. Some of the most decorated Indian films of the last six years never played in a cinema. Soorarai Pottru won five National Film Awards including Best Feature Film; Sardar Udham and Kathal both won Best Hindi Feature Film. Netflix and Prime Video began commissioning films for streaming from the start, and some of the most interesting Malayalam cinema of the period found its audience this way.

The fifteen below are in order of their streaming premiere, not ranked. Platform chips show where each one streams in India today, which is not always where it first premiered.
