Indian True-Crime Documentaries Worth Watching, and Where They Stream

Ten Indian true-crime documentaries and docuseries, from the Burari deaths and the Jolly Joseph cyanide case to Veerappan and the Sheena Bora murder, with the case behind each one and where it streams in India.

OTTweek Desk · · 4 min read

Indian true crime on streaming took off in 2021 with House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, and Netflix in particular has kept commissioning since: serial-killer series, a feature-length poisoning case from Kerala, a four-part history of the Veerappan manhunt. Prime Video followed with Dancing on the Grave, about a murder in 1990s Bangalore.

Several of these were fought in court before they could be released. The Central Bureau of Investigation asked the Bombay High Court to stop the Indrani Mukerjea series while her trial was under way, and one episode of Bad Boy Billionaires: India was held back by a Hyderabad court for more than five years.

The ten below are documentaries about real cases, not dramatised series based on them, so Delhi Crime and Scam 1992 are not here. They are in release order, not ranked. Platform chips show where each one streams in India today.

Selvamani Selvaraj's four-part series on the sandalwood smuggler and poacher who evaded the police of two states for decades in the forests along the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border. It is built on interviews with people from both sides of the manhunt.
