Diwali 2026 runs from Dhanteras on 6 November to Bhai Dooj on 10 November, with Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November. For many families it is the one time in the year when grandparents, parents and children are in the same room with a free evening, and the hard part is finding a film all of them will sit through.
Hindi cinema has a long tradition of exactly that kind of film. Hrishikesh Mukherjee made gentle middle-class comedies in the 1970s that still work. Sooraj Barjatya built a career on joint-family weddings. More recent films such as Kapoor & Sons and Badhaai Ho made the family itself the subject, awkward conversations included.
The thirteen below are in release order, not ranked, and every one is fine to watch with children. Platform chips show where each one streams in India today. For the big theatrical release of Diwali week, Ramayana: Part 1, see our guide to earlier screen Ramayanas.
