Indian horror spent years being dismissed as cheap haunted-house films. That reputation no longer fits. In the last fifteen years the genre has produced some of the most inventive films in the country, often on small budgets: a Tamil debut made for about ₹1.5 crore, a Hindi folk tale that took more than twenty years to reach the screen, and a Malayalam film shot entirely in black and white.
This list leaves out the Stree, Bhediya and Munjya films. Those have their own Maddock horror-comedy watch order. What is left is a mix of languages and approaches: psychological horror, folk horror, a dybbuk story rooted in Kerala's Jewish history, and a Netflix miniseries made with Blumhouse.
